What is Shingles & What Are the Symptoms

Typically the shingles rash occurs on one side of the body or the other. It may also appear on the face in a single stripe. Children can also contract shingles but it is often painless.

People are more likely to get shingles as they age, and the disease tends to be more severe for the older.

At the onset of shingles, symptoms may include headache, fever, and a general feeling of discomfort. These symptoms are nonspecific and may result in an incorrect diagnosis.

However, should shingles be the culprit, these symptoms are commonly followed by feelings of burning pain, itching, over sensitivity, or a tingling feeling.

Pain can be mild to extreme in the affected areas and include sensations often described as stinging, tingling, aching, numbing or throbbing. These sensations can also include quick stabs of pain.

The initial phase of shingles, usually lasting one to two days or up to 3 weeks, is followed by the appearance of a skin rash. The pain and rash most commonly show up on the torso, but can appear on the face, eyes or other parts of the body.

The first appearance of the rash can look like hives; however shingles will normally appear in a striped or belt-shaped pattern. Shingles is also limited to appearing on one side of the body and does not cross the middle.

Later the rash will begin to form small blisters filled with a pus-like fluid or ooze and you will often continue with a fever and general discomfort. The painful blisters will eventually become darkened as they fill with blood and crust over within seven to ten days. The crusts usually the fall off and the skin heals. However, after severe blistering, scarring and discolored skin may remain.

Usually the rash will heal within 2-4 weeks, however, some people may develop ongoing nerve pain lasting for a few month or even years. This condition is called postherpetic neuralgia. For those who have a weak immune system, the rash may be more wide spread. Also, if the rash involves the eye, vision loss may occur.
